Personally I think the '06 3.0 is just fine, it is the same engine that I have in my X3 with 45K miles on it and burns maybe a qt of oil between the BMW recommended change intervals of 15k miles. OTOH my neighbor's 4.4 X5 is a gas hog that burns oil.
