This is achieved by inserting the screwdriver *at an angle* thus: It takes a little practice, but with a little care it can be done quickly. Once the assembly has been released, twist the bulb holder to remove it from the lens assembly and replace the bulb. Put it all back together and clip back in place.
Replaced the rear trailing arm bushes, but I couldn't find much info on doing this with the special tool whilst still attached to the car. So I've written a guide. Press the 3 clips two on left & one on right side of unit inwards towards the bulb socket, Plenty of interest in the bulb holder section of the unit for those fitting additional reverse light will need the bit of your unit that is un damaged.

You can as mentioned remove the bulbs, but there is also a wire that detects when the door is open. I used to have a thread saved for it, wasn't on this forum unfortunately.
